the eye test

As a personal trainer, most of my clients are concerned about their weight.  While it might not be at the top of their list in terms of fitness goals, it will inevitably come up.  A good question to ask yourself is why do you want to lose weight?  For some, it is to lower their blood pressure or other health concerns, but for many, it is to look good.  I tell my clients that weighing yourself is a horrible way to measure health.  My BMI puts me in the overweight category, but I don’t really care because it is obvious that I am fit.  I pass the eye test.

Say that you hit your goal weight, but just by dieting.  Yes, congratulations on hitting your goal, but a better question is “why do you want to hit that weight goal?”  Are you planning on dieting for the rest of your life?  When most people begin to work out, they will actually gain weight because they are building lean muscle and toning their body.  They might weight more, but all are happy with the results that they see.
